Happy Autumn Equinox!

Happy Autumn Equinox!

Fev'rish heat,
These summer nights,
Doth whisper forth the autumn.
Emerge from tombs,
Witches take flight,
And dance beneath leaves auburn.

And a happy Libra season, as well!

This short poem I wrote a couple years ago when I lived in Kentucky. I was walking outside my apartment after dusk in September, noticing how a residual warmth drifted upon the air as a threat of chill lurked beneath. The sky was an abyssal blue leaking into black, the residents of the neighborhood had begun decorating for Halloween, and the night shadows burrowed their way into the stone walls, seeking to escape from the sodium orange glow that the street lamps leaked onto the sidewalk. The age-old image of witches flying on broomsticks amidst the bats came into mind. The rustle of leaves and the local cemetery I frequented added to the scene. I wrote the poem in my head as I returned to my door, but it has remained a favorite of mine. It's concise, playful, and a call to action. Maybe one day I'll write another longer, better version, but until then, have a blessed autumn equinox and spooky Halloween!

Witchingly,

— Clark
